Understanding Percentages

What is a Percentage?

In mathematics, a percentage represents a fraction of 100. It’s a way to express proportions, much like ratios, fractions, and decimals. The percentage symbol "%" follows the number, but you may also see "percent" or "pct" used instead. For example, 35% is equivalent to 0.35 in decimal form or 35/100 as a fraction.

How to Calculate a Percentage

Percentages are determined by multiplying a ratio by 100. For example, if 25 out of 50 students in a class are male:

25/50 = 0.5 × 100 = 50%

Percentage Formula

The general formula follows this structure:

P × V₁ = V₂

Where P = percentage, V₁ = initial value, V₂ = resulting value. Example solving for P:

P × 30 = 1.5 → P = 1.5/30 = 0.05 → 5%

Percentage Difference Formula

(|V₁ - V₂| / ((V₁ + V₂)/2)) × 100

Example:

(|10 - 6| / 8) × 100 = 50%

Percentage Change Formula

(|V₁ - V₂| / V₁) × 100

Examples:

10% increase: 500 × 1.1 = 550
10% decrease: 500 × 0.9 = 450
